"No man can be a good teacher unless he has feelings of warm affection toward his pupils and a genuine desire to impart to them what he himself believes to be of value." -Bertrand Russell
Mrs. Laurie Marshall
I can not remember a time when I did not want to be a teacher. Growing up, I always called out, "I want to be the teacher" when playing school with my friends.
I was born and raised in Bartlesville. I attended Richard Kane Elementary, Central Middle School, Bartlesville Mid High, and Bartlesville High School. I graduated in 2001 from BHS. After high school, I decided to go to University of Central Oklahoma to reach my childhood dream and ultimate goal of being a teacher. As a former Normal School (teacher prep college) and a continuing leader in teacher education, UCO seemed like a perfect fit for me.
After graduation in 2005, I moved back to Bartlesville to begin my career as an educator. I was hired on as a second grade teacher at Wilson Elementary for the 2006-2007 school year. I instantly knew that I made a good decision. I love teaching!
Just before my second year at Wilson and after his graduation from Oklahoma State University, my high school sweetheart, Justin Marshall, proposed. We got married during Spring Break in 2008. We moved just outside of Bartlesville and created our home and lives together. He started a business in landscape contracting and design, Maisema Land & Waterscapes.
In the fall of 2008, Tasha Posch, Vanessa Wallace (both currently Wilson teachers), and I became interested in a Master's Degree Program at Oklahoma State University. In January of 2009, the three of us started back to school to get our graduate degrees at the Tulsa campus. In December of 2010, we walked across the stage together with Master's in Teaching, Learning, and Leadership with an emphasis in Reading/Literacy.
Justin and I were blessed in December of 2012 when we welcomed our son, Burke, into the world. We instantly fell in love and Burke became the most important thing in the world to us. So far, parenthood has been the most rewarding yet exhausting thing we have ever done.
As the years have gone by, I have become more and more passionate about teaching and educating children. I am often seeking out and attending professional development as well as engaging in professional conversations with my colleagues and my husband who is a local soccer coach. I have been trained in Literacy First, Love & Logic, A+ Schools, Great Expectations, Data Teams, and Keeping Score.
As I recently had my own child, I understand how important your children are to you. My goal as a teacher is to prepare students to be productive citizens of our society in a positive and caring manner. I believe that children thrive when given responsibility and goals. I intend to incorporate these beliefs and goals through the school year.
